The List

Kasper Sonne (Copenhagen, 1974) lives and works in New York. His work revolves around conceptual strategies, invoked with a certain sense of poetics, melancholia and doubt. He explores how individual and cultural references influence the way we read the world around us, and how meaning is determined by the viewer's own active construction. By questioning the conventionally adopted symbol values and culturally dictated "truths”, he seem to suggest that if the very things that we take for granted are merely based on a cultural decision, it means that we can also decide for them to mean something else. Bordering on a play with fact and fiction, the works deal with the notion of representation and the continuous construction and deconstruction of meaning: Within the work itself, between the work and its surroundings, and, most importantly, in a dialogue between the work and its audience.

The List (2010) is completely devoid of representational images, thus questioning our traditional perception of the media through the presentation of a sequence of 175 written statements. Reading of existential matters in a stream of consciousness type style, each statement is linked to the next by a single word and projected in endless succession. The statements speak to us collectively in their simplicity and our recognition of them as stereotypes within our culture, but as they reveal neither their origin nor their destination they are left open for personal interpretation.
