Tide

Luke White (GB 1987) lives and works in London. He began filmmaking as a self-taught venture which later became a full time lifestyle at Chelsea College of Art. His films, laden with notions of nostalgia, are often a product of his various creative outputs incorporating drawing, painting, animation and sculpture. Growing up between France and England, Luke remains conscious of the presence of cultural difference which has informed and inspired his later work.

Tide (2009) is spanning deserted beaches and snow filled forests to fantastical studio sets. A boy and his father live a harsh existence against a desolate backdrop. Whilst the father is stranded, the boy’s physique allows him to pass through a small tunnel leading to a place very different from their own. He brings back footage to satisfy his father’s desire to re-live memories of when he too could make this journey. Tide is the story of a father’s obsession that will ultimately lose him the respect of his son, and in turn his companionship.
