Cataract Sun

Steven Scott’s work engages with the presentation, experience and interpretation of imagery via a range of strategies, most often by utilizing phenomenological theories of the physicality of our presence and its impact upon the process of perception. To this end he works across a range of media from video, and video projection, photography and light boxes, text, drawing and print, that in various ways draw a viewer into an immersive experience while also triggering self awareness through the possible interpretation of the work.

Cataract Sun (2006) From a series of works referencing relationships between the physiological effects of the sun, and the danger of direct sunlight on the eyes. Underlying this series is the notional relationship between sunlight, vision and consciousness. This real time unedited video was shot using a cheap low resolution CCTV camera. The distorted colors and the black disc on the sun's image are the result of this camera's inability to cope with the intensity of direct light, by chance giving the appearance of a huge solar eye in the sky. As the video progresses clouds drift across the sky momentarily obscuring this 'eye'.
