Machine

Mo Stoebe (Austria) is director and visual artist working with a variety of tools to create graphic moving images. Mo holds an MA from the Royal College of Art. In the UK, Mo is represented by www.rokkit.tv.

Nightsong was fuelled by an interest in a dynamic relationship between sound and graphic form and manifestation of graphic form on texture and background by projecting light. As an extension of the same question I wanted to investigate the possibility of a physical manifestation of sound as pure light becoming three-dimensional, dynamic sculpture. When projecting animations of scores in different locations, a possibility of interaction between the environment and the movement and shapes opens up. In that sense I see the animations collaborating with the environment – carving sculptures out of backgrounds they are being played on.

Machine seeks to express the notion of our world moving towards a collision point… slowly and unstoppable. What I tried to look for within the environment of cities (in this case London and Los Angeles) were large, heavy objects moving at a constant speed. 'Machine' is a film made up out of a collection of such images, which, by definition, exist somewhere between still and moving image.
