Joy Whalen (1983) lives and works in New York City. received her BFA from Columbia College Chicago in 2005 and her MFA from Pratt Institute in 2007. She has exhibited extensively in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, as well as internationally. Whalen’s video work tells a tale and documents abstracted attempts to coalesce with the world. Ever since childhood She has been developing a sonorous realm of her own accord: a singular place, which she fills with obscure treasures and bits of lush information ranging from pieces of history to innovative design, quirky science to high fashion. Within this world she travels, and her explorations are captured on video. Within these carefully constructed spaces there is muteness and minimal sound, time and movement ebb and flow like the tides or cascade like downpour.

“We don’t know what to do with other worlds, we don’t need other worlds. We need a mirror. We struggle for contact, but we’ll never find it. Here in the foolish human predicament of striving for a goal that he fears, that he has no need for. Man needs man.” --From Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solyaris (1972)
